MARYLAND, APRIL 2000
You were a prisoner of war!â Mary exclaimed. âGood heavens! I would have died if Iâd known they had captured you.â She caught her breath and gently fanned her face. âI suppose not knowing was easier than having to live with the knowledge that the Germans had captured you. What a terrible thought!â
Robert smiled. âYeah,â he said softly and took a long drag off the cigarette. âI guess that I donât need to tell you that I was frightened to death. I didnât have any choice but to walk up that long road to where the Germans were waiting for us.â
Mary looked out the window. The afternoon would be over before long. Everything looked peaceful and serene. Life went on as if it had been this way for a thousand uninterrupted years.
âSeems quite lovely out there,â Robert said. âWhoâd believe that all of that nice, quietly ordered way of life was paid for by the lives of people who died in World War II? Today most people donât even remember much about what happened.â
Mary studied Robertâs face. Time had taken its toll, but she still saw the handsomeness. âI remember, Robert.â She cleared her throat. âI remember our time together in Sterling.â
Robert nodded his head. âYeah.â He answered softly.
âIt was the best time in my life.â Maryâs voice quivered.
He looked away and didnât answer. Robert had turned his face so she couldnât see his eyes. Mary waited for what seemed an interminable amount of time, but she didnât speak.
âMaybe I ought to go on with the story.â Robert finally turned around, and his eyes looked reddish.
âSure.â Mary shook her head. âI want to know everything. Please tell me what happened next after you decided to surrender. I know you were frightened out of your skin.â
Robert took another puff. âWasnât easy,â he said, âbut the five infantrymen and I kept walking down that long road out of Bullingen with our white surrender flag blowing in the cold wind. We looked like lost chickens wandering off to be slaughtered.â
